Conservation commission backs scout'led Eagle project to install bat boxes and signs at Tunxis Sports Complex

Lucas said the plan calls for 13 prebuilt bat-box kits that will be mounted on existing sign poles near the fields to provide roosting habitat for local bat species and help reduce mosquitoes. The scout said the Farmington Soccer Club and a volunteer group purchased the kits, and that he has an agreement with the soccer club to check the boxes annually while he remains in scouting.
Lucas also proposed two wayfinding signs to be mounted on existing poles near the skate park intersection to improve navigation during games and tournaments. The signs will match current town specifications and be fabricated by a contractor the town has used previously. Lucas said the bat boxes are preassembled and require minimal maintenance, and he expects periodic checks once a year.
Commissioners praised the project as beneficial to local biodiversity and recreation. Bruce (staff) clarified that the soccer club purchased the kits and that the town's volunteer organization would assist with installation and maintenance. The commission moved to support the project as proposed; the motion passed unanimously.
