Students, parent tell Windsor Unified board to keep Psychology 2 course

Several Windsor High students and a parent urged the Windsor Unified School District board on Thursday to retain Psychology 2 after administrators signaled the course would not be offered next year.

Senior Kylie Hernandez told trustees the course offers a rare, supportive space for students to learn about themselves and about mental‑health topics. “To remove this class would be a devastating disservice to the community,” Hernandez said, arguing the class fosters identity, discussion and emotional safety for many students.

Other students echoed the appeal. Sophomore Jefferson Nicks said he switched into AP Psychology because it met a health credit, and later discovered the subject’s broad value; senior Shaiden Whiting described Psych 2 as “the most educating class that I’ve ever been in,” saying it shaped her future plans. Parent Lisa Ward said her daughter’s participation prompted her to seek a career in pediatric psychiatry: “My daughter changed her dreams about what she wants to do when she grows up,” Ward said.

Board members thanked the speakers and noted the procedural limitation that non‑agendized public comment cannot be decided on at the same meeting. The board president said the comments had been heard and would be taken into consideration as staff and trustees review course‑offering decisions.
