Commission approves concept 2 for North Old Woodward design, asks staff to study parking and bus stops

The commission approved a preliminary design concept (concept 2) for North Old Woodward Avenue from Oak to Woodward, favoring restrained lane geometry, formalized parallel parking, new bump-outs and a designated bus pullout. Engineering emphasized the area’s wide travel lanes, inconsistent parking patterns and two bus stops within close proximity.
Concept 2 extends left-turn stacking north of the gas station and creates a clearer approach for vehicles entering the station while preserving most parking in front of adjacent condos. Staff noted a planning grant to install a bus shelter at the southern stop and said the consultant will coordinate striping, ADA-compliant curb ramps and potential additional parking options on the east side of the road.
Commissioners asked staff to check whether both existing bus stops remain necessary and to consult MDOT and police about schedule and detour impacts if construction is accelerated prior to the Dream Cruise event. Commissioner Kozlowski and others preferred concept 2 for traffic operations; the commission approved the motion to adopt the concept and investigate added parking after questions about tree locations and right-of-way use.
Engineering will return with more detailed designs, a schedule and options for parking and transit-stop consolidation.
