Rail-grade crossing project approved by state agencies; CSX to install gates at Harbor Drive

Council members updated the village on a rail-grade crossing safety project at the foot of Harbor Drive and reported state agencies approved upgrades to improve visibility and add active gates.
A council member said he contacted Operation Lifesaver and the Ohio Rail Commission, provided photographs and pursued meetings that led to approval. The plan calls for removing the existing crossbucks and stop sign, installing new flashing lights and up/down gates and replacing a small trackside building that will handle electrical equipment; CSX Railroad will perform much of the field work, according to council comments.
The council noted the work is tentatively scheduled between April 7 and May 4 and stated that the contractor does not anticipate a full road closure, although there may be temporary closures for equipment movements. The project manager named in discussion was Eric Thompson of the rail grade crossing safety group.
During the update council members raised potential coordination issues with a proposed road-widening project nearby and asked staff to alert the state/rail crews so features can be relocated if necessary.
The estimate cited at the meeting for the broader safety and crossing improvements (including contingency) was $618,834. Council members said they have copies of the plans and will coordinate timing with the Miami Street-widening proposal if required.
No formal vote was required of council at this meeting; the report served as an informational update and notice of upcoming work.
