The mayor and council used the Dec. 8 meeting to thank the town’s departing police chief for 34½ years of service. The chief addressed the council and community, saying he was "blessed to be a part of the community" and that he was retiring from the post but not the community.
"Again, 34 and a half years... I am blessed to be a part of the community," the chief said, thanking council and staff. Council members and town staff thanked the chief and invited him forward for a ceremonial photo with flags.
The mayor announced that Lieutenant Fisher — a familiar name to many residents — will take over in an interim capacity as chief of police. The mayor told the council that Berlin remains "in good hands" with Fisher as interim chief, and council members congratulated both officers and offered appreciation for the chief’s decades of service.
Council did not discuss a long-term replacement process at the meeting beyond the interim appointment; personnel processes and next steps were left to the administration to manage under town policy.
