Berlin utility reports high winter loads after polar vortex; PJM quarterly figures presented

Jim Lawrence, Berlin’s electric utility director, presented the required PJM quarterly report for the period covering July through September 2025. He reported 12,255,046 kWh sold, an American Municipal Power purchase-power bill of $4,493,432, PJM charges of about $398,972 and total reported power costs and a cost per kilowatt-hour of about $0.06902. Council members thanked the utility for work during the recent polar-vortex outages.
Utility staff also described emergency responses during extreme cold: tree-related pole breaks, fuse failures and multiple circuit restorations over a multi-day period. The electric director said teams worked through the night to restore service, briefly reducing outages to single-digit customer counts in many locations and later fully restoring service after pole replacement and fuse repairs.
