After hearing a summary of public comment from a Feb. 7 meeting, the Berlin Mayor and Council agreed on Feb. 9 to send a formal, collegial letter to Ocean City asking that the Home Farm site (adjacent to Stephen Decatur High and Middle schools) be removed from consideration for a proposed regional sports complex. Council members said residents expressed substantial concerns about traffic, neighborhood impact and quality-of-life effects at the public session.
Council members said the letter will express appreciation for regional collaboration while representing the town’s formal position that the Home Farm parcel is not an appropriate site for the proposed complex. Several council members suggested copying state decision-makers and Worcester County officials so that the sentiment is visible to legislators and grant-approval authorities.
The mayor said Berlin remains open to regional collaboration on recreational goals but asked Ocean City and state funders to weigh strong local community feedback in site selection.
