Platteville council approves petition seeking airport improvement aid

Bill Kloster, chairman of the airport commission, told the council many items on the list are speculative and described the constraints for major items such as runway extensions, including FAA traffic thresholds, possible land purchase, road rerouting and large fill needs. Kloster said a runway extension would be a large undertaking — “at least $5,000,000” — and stressed the city would need to demonstrate traffic thresholds to the FAA before such a project could move forward.
Council members asked practical questions about airport operations. Kloster said helicopters occasionally use the airport but none are permanently based there and that both piston (100LL) and turbine (jet) fuels are used depending on aircraft. He also described an effort by a private individual to form a flying club that could provide flight training if established.
The council closed the public hearing and then voted to approve the petition; the chair recorded the motion as carrying. No project-specific funding or construction was approved during the meeting; the vote authorizes only submission of the petition to preserve the city’s eligibility for future aid.
