Crestwood Middle School celebrates A rating, large gains on state assessments

Crestwood Middle School on Thursday told the Village of Royal Palm Beach Education Advisory Board that it has regained an A rating for the 2025 school year after sizeable gains on state assessments.
"We regained our A rating for the 2025 school year," said Doctor Stephanie Nance, Crestwood's principal, presenting data that showed a jump from roughly 57% to 67% of students meeting grade-level standards in English language arts and double-digit gains in mathematics. Nance said geometry maintained a 100% passing rate and that the school led Palm Beach County middle schools in algebra growth with a PYD (proportion of a year's growth) of 1.69.
The principal described strategies behind the gains: targeted professional learning communities, standards-aligned instruction, and emphasis on differentiated supports for English learners and students with disabilities. Crestwood serves roughly 720275 students, Nance said, with about 76% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch and 18+ languages represented on campus.
Doctor Sheena Powell, sponsor of the school's National Junior Honor Society, introduced 29 NJHS members who described volunteer activities including visits to a senior living center, fundraisers and a haunted-house event used to raise money and food for families in need. NJHS president Lucas Alvarado said the group also helps younger students with academic support in Powell's classroom.
Powell said NJHS members participated in a July leadership retreat where they presented proposals to Mayor Hamara, including a recommendation to address vaping in village parks; the mayor pledged to look into the concern. "They were their ideas and they came up with them and they presented them," Powell said of the student presenters.
The presentation closed with village leaders and board members congratulating Crestwood staff and students and reminding families about upcoming SAC meetings and opportunities to engage with school programs.
The advisory board approved the meeting minutes during the same session and adjourned after liaison reports and community announcements.
