The City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach voted to accept the Nov. 5, 2024 general election results and formally acknowledged Fabiola Stuyvesant as the winner of Commission Seat 3. The commission also noted that Commission Seat 1 remains in a runoff to be held Dec. 3, 2024.
The acceptance came after a brief presentation by a staff member who outlined the election outcome and the pending runoff. The presiding official asked for a motion to adopt a resolution certifying the results; a motion and second were made, and the commission responded with a series of vocal "Aye" votes. No "No" votes or abstentions were recorded in the transcript.
Commissioner Fabiola Stuyvesant, who was immediately sworn into office, addressed the room with an extended statement thanking supporters and describing a disputed, personal campaign environment. "I stand before you today with a deep sense of gratitude and humility," Stuyvesant said. She alleged that her campaign and family had been the target of organized attacks, including what she characterized as "lies, fake accusations," "frivolous condo lawsuit[s]," and a coordinated effort she described as an "orchestrated bad arrest," which she said was later dropped. She also accused opponents and outside actors of using political committees, developer funding and social media to circulate misinformation.
The oath of office was administered immediately afterward; during the recitation Stuyvesant repeated the standard oath to "support, protect, and defend the Constitution and government of the United States and the State of Florida and the charter of the City of Sunny Isles Beach." The transcript records the oath being administered by the city clerk and references a former mayor (named in the transcript as Norman Yellikov) taking part in the ceremony. The commission congratulated Commissioner Stuyvesant following the oath.
There were no public speakers for the item. With no further business, the presiding official adjourned the meeting.
