Shawnee sets 2026 municipal election dates, approves consent agenda; resident questions budget amendment and development

Commissioners adopted a resolution calling nonpartisan elections for Wards 1, 5 and 6 (June 16, 2026; runoff Aug. 25), approved the consent agenda 7-0, and heard a citizen raise concerns about a Fund 001 budget amendment and a planned development across from Sequoia.
The Shawnee City Commission adopted a resolution calling and providing for nonpartisan general and runoff elections to nominate and elect city commissioners for Wards 1, 5 and 6. Staff (Lisa Lassiani, Chief Operations Officer) said the statutory filing period will be in April at the Pottawatomie County Election Board; the general election is scheduled for June 16, 2026, with a runoff on August 25 if necessary. The commission approved the resolution 7-0 after the city attorney read the resolution title.
The consent agenda was approved by unanimous vote. During citizen participation, Rob Morris asked that consent-agenda Item C (a budget amendment in Fund 001) be pulled for discussion, questioned an approximately $1.5 million increase to a property purchase, and urged the commission to review developers involved in a separate project across from Sequoia. Morris said: "...when you go by, like, 5 different names and 15 LLCs and 4 of them are being sued right now," and asked commissioners to look into the parties before proceeding.
Officer Reis of Johnny Animal Control presented "Bolt," a Pomeranian mix, as the Pet of the Month and encouraged adoption; the item was informational. Following business and reports the commission adjourned and briefly convened the Shawnee Airport Authority and Municipal Authority to handle routine consent items before adjourning for the night.
