The Panama City Community Fund board, meeting as the city commission's community-fund body on Feb. 24, approved two scholarship options to support access to the MLK Junior Recreation Center and authorized a solicitation letter for contributions.
Staff described two options for the scholarship program: (1) a one-year membership scholarship valued up to $100 and (2) scholarships to cover paid programming (summer camp, STEM events, etc.) up to $150 per instance, available up to three times per year. Staff said about 2,000 accounts had been set up since mid-January when the membership portal opened.
"Applicants will be able to apply for a 1 year membership scholarship valued up to $100," staff said while outlining Option 1 and the application process; the board voted to approve both options and the solicitation letter by roll call, 4-0.
Separately, staff provided an update on Truesdale Park and clubhouse: the administration expects to bring a bid recommendation for the parking-lot work to the March 10 meeting and said roughly $750,000 in HRP funds are available to support the park, parking lot and exterior clubhouse work, with interior build-out planned via donations and CRA funds. Staff outlined plans to solicit in-kind donations and community labor for interior finishes and to track and acknowledge contributions.
