She also gave a progress report on the district's Safe Routes to School initiative, describing an 18-month collaboration involving the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Lucas County Department of Transportation and Engineers and Sylvania Township. "Our Safe Routes to School initiative is finally off the ground and running," she said.
LaVola said the planned improvements include a sidewalk in front of Whitefield Elementary, walking-trail enhancements at Arbor Hills to improve building access, and a re-alignment of a planned sidewalk that will now run along the east side of Mitchell to connect with Central Trail and provide walking access from the new River Tree development. She said crews have started clearing trees behind Whitefield and that, weather permitting, construction could be ready by the first day of school in August.
The district did not provide project budgets or precise construction timelines at the meeting; LaVola said only that partners have been engaged and work is being planned for "a couple of our buildings across the district." The board did not take formal action on the infrastructure items at this session.
The March 11 event at Northview High School is slated to summarize what LaVola described as "what's going well in Sylvania schools" and areas of opportunity identified in the community survey.
