Brighton trustees hear mental‑health, curriculum and facilities updates from stakeholders and principals

Summary
Stakeholder leaders updated the board on mental‑health program evaluation, URMC consultations (about 100 last year and 82 referrals at middle/high sites), curriculum pilots selecting College Preparatory Math for grades 7–8, and facilities needs including aging mechanical systems that will be prioritized in capital planning.
Stakeholder leaders and district staff told the board that the mental-health and student-support "blueprint" has yielded more professional development, partner consultations and an ongoing program evaluation aimed at aligning supports across K–12. Staff reported nearly 100 URMC consultations last year and 82 referrals accessing mental-health providers at the middle and high school sites, and they recommended further professional development, alignment of SEL lessons and reallocation of resources to support students with significant social, emotional and behavioral needs.
Curriculum staff described K–8 math pilot work. Seventh and eighth grades piloted College Preparatory Math and Connected Math 4; after teacher feedback and training the district has selected College Preparatory Math for grades 7–8 and will expand pilot work at the K–5 level next year. Staff emphasized cross-grade transfer goals intended to align student experiences from kindergarten through 12th grade.
John Novelli, director of buildings and grounds, briefed the board on facilities planning: many mechanical systems and rooftop units are 25–30 years old and are candidates for phased replacement. Novelli and facilities staff said work behind walls and above ceilings is essential for ongoing operations and that prioritized projects will be paired with the operating budget and reserves in May.
Principals from French Road, TCMS, Council Rock and BHS highlighted school-level events, partnerships and upcoming activities — including a Mobile Museum of Tolerance visit, the district STEAM Fest, student leadership work, community service drives and international exchanges — and listed upcoming concerts, fairs and family-engagement events.
