DHHS requests later effective date for new abortion-reporting law to allow funding and implementation

Sen. Regina Burtzel brought a technical bill at DHHS's request to change the effective date for a new abortion data reporting requirement. John Williams of DHHS said the change to July 1, 2027, would allow the department to include implementation costs (estimated in testimony at roughly $948,000) in the next biennial operating budget and to address a drafting issue introduced in the House'passed version that struck the word "estimated" from gestational-age reporting language.
Williams asked the committee to keep the bill in play so the administration can track the governor's action on the related conference-report legislation and otherwise ensure appropriate appropriations and implementation time are in place. The committee agreed to move the bill forward.
