Parents and volunteers press Woodland Park to fund Meadowood rink upgrades; city to issue RFP for Meadowood projects
Summary
Volunteers described a shortened hockey season at Meadowood due to warm weather and urged the council to fund a chiller and roof as part of Meadowood Sports Complex phase 1; staff said an RFP for rink, chiller, turf and other Meadowood projects will be issued soon and cited an available budget figure (~$2.75M).

Parents and volunteer coaches told the Woodland Park City Council the community’s youth hockey and recreation programs suffered this season because Meadowood’s outdoor rink lacked a chiller and shelter, and they urged the city to continue funding Meadowood Sports Complex phase 1.
Chanel Walzer, president of the Woodland Park Hockey Association, said volunteers logged more than 100 man‑hours trying to maintain ice and that the association represents about 120 youth across programs. ‘‘We began making ice right after Thanksgiving to only lose it to warm temperatures within about a week,’’ Walzer said, adding that a chiller under the slab and a roof would extend usable months from October through March and could allow the city to host more events and generate rental revenue.
In response to the public comment, staff noted the city will issue a request for proposals (RFP) for Meadowood projects, including turf, hockey rink work, chillers and pickleball improvements. City staff referenced a budgetary figure for Meadowood work (approximately $2,750,000) and encouraged interested contractors to bid when the RFP is released.
Council members thanked volunteers and urged staff to move forward with procurement and planning work so the Meadowood projects can be implemented in forthcoming construction seasons.
