St. Louis County proclaims March 3 as 'Depot Day,' marks HVAC project kickoff

A commissioner read the proclamation, noting the Depot’s long history in Duluth and listing current tenants including the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, North Shore Scenic Railroad, Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and others. County staff said the building has welcomed visitors since 1892 and that county ownership dates to 1972. The proclamation will be placed in a time capsule at the Depot.
County staff described a kickoff event tied to the HVAC project scheduled for March 3 from 5:00 to about 6:30 p.m., which will include historic displays, blueprints and brief remarks from community partners and county officials. Staff urged the public and commissioners to attend and thanked employees and tenant organizations for their work on the project.
Board members praised staff and volunteers for the Depot’s programming and use, and noted the building’s continuing role for weddings, performances and community events. No formal vote beyond the proclamation reading was required to mark the event.
The board’s action is ceremonial but coincides with an infrastructure project the county describes as intended to preserve the facility and improve energy efficiency over the long term. The county said the work began on March 3 and will be celebrated annually.
