SALT LAKE CITY — The House Revenue and Taxation Committee on Thursday approved a favorable recommendation for SB 190, which amends vehicle-registration notice requirements and gives an option to pay upfront for a lifetime registration for certain noncommercial trailers that do not operate interstate.
Representative Lisonbee, presenting the bill, said trailers are often low-use vehicles and giving owners the option to pay multiple years in advance and receive a lifetime tag is taxpayer-friendly. "Basically, they can pay for, I believe it's 4 years of the registration upfront, and then they'll be issued a tag that is a lifetime registration for the vehicle," Lisonbee said.
Members asked how the option will appear to consumers; Lisonbee said the DMV will determine logistics. Committee members voiced support for the concept and Representative Strong moved the favorable recommendation. The motion passed by voice vote; the transcript does not show a roll-call.
Next steps: SB 190 advances from committee; DMV will handle implementation details if the bill becomes law.
