Superintendent Dr. Lathan updated the Board of Education on events and operational issues, including volunteer recognition, retiree honors, graduations and an ongoing city‑wide electrical outage.
He said the district will host a community partner and volunteer celebration this Thursday to honor 15 volunteers and 14 partners in excellence, and that the teacher‑of‑the‑year announcement and retiree recognitions are scheduled imminently. Dr. Lathan noted graduation for the class of 2025 will be held at Great Southern Bank Arena on May 17 and that event details are available at sps.org.
On operations, Dr. Lathan said the district was monitoring power outages across the city and at least 23 campus sites and hoped to have a decision about schools by 8:00 p.m. that evening.
"We are monitoring the power outages across the city and at at least 23 of our campus sites. We will make a decision as it relates to, schools, and hopefully, we will have that information out by 08:00 tonight," he said.
The board received the update with no vote required.
