Selectmen Appoint Jim Trafficante as Simsbury Emergency Management Director

The Town of Simsbury Board of Selectmen voted Feb. 23 to appoint James (Jim) Trafficante as the town’s director of civil preparedness (emergency management director), effective immediately to fill the remainder of the current term and with the prospect of the full two‑year term beginning July 1.
Gary Wilcox, president of the Simsbury Fire District, recommended Trafficante, noting the nominee’s decade of service with the district, 38 years of military service with nine deployments and more than 1,000 combat flying hours, and a bachelor’s degree in emergency management. “He is uniquely qualified for our asking to promote him from position of assistant emergency management director to the emergency management director,” Wilcox said.
Town Manager Mark Nelson introduced the appointment and thanked outgoing director Mike Berry for his service; Nelson said he and staff spoke with Trafficante and were satisfied with his qualifications. A Selectman (Speaker 9) moved to appoint Trafficante to fill the remainder of the current term and to continue into the next full two‑year term; the motion was seconded and the board approved the appointment by voice vote.
The board phrased the position as nonpolitical and emphasized that the first selectman will be included in emergency discussions per charter practice. The board also expressed appreciation for Berry’s service.
