Parent: student locked out during Santa Fe High lockdown; district says 911 will be used going forward

A parent told the Santa Fe Public School Board on Nov. 13 that two students were locked out between classes during an Oct. 29 lockdown at Santa Fe High and lacked clear guidance on what to do.
Diane Lavati said she and her family met with school leaders and called attention to what she described as a gap in the protocol for students who find themselves outside locked out of buildings during a lockdown. "There was just a gap in the protocol for what students are supposed to do when they're not in the right place during a lockdown," Lavati said, adding that had the event involved a real threat the students would have been vulnerable.
Lavati praised the principal, the superintendent, the head of security and the dean at Santa Fe High for being "incredibly responsive" after the incident and said district staff informed her the district plans to use the 9-1-1 system for students who find themselves outside during future lockdowns. Lavati and other speakers said training for teachers, parents and students on any revised protocol has not yet occurred and urged the board to ensure training happens.
Board members acknowledged the comment; Board Member Bose said she had high confidence in existing security measures while stressing the need for continuous improvement, retraining and clear protocols for substitutes and new students. Superintendent Dr. Christine Griffin told the board district staff had been responsive and said the district has a plan to help schools identified for support.
No formal board action or change to written policy was adopted at the meeting; comments were made during the public forum and will inform staff follow-up.
