Board asks staff to study standards‑based grading after student and teacher concerns

The Santa Fe Public Schools Board on Dec. 10 asked the superintendent to direct a survey and study of standards‑based grading at the high school level following multiple complaints from teachers and students.
Vice President Noble placed the topic on the agenda to distinguish standards‑based grading from standards‑based instruction and to request a careful review of practice at Santa Fe high schools. Several board members and students described implementation problems: a student board member said many students "don't understand what these proficiency targets mean" and that grading systems in PowerSchool/Canvas were not translating standards effectively.
Board Member Heffron and others said they had received complaints from high‑school teachers about unintended negative impacts in classes such as engineering. Superintendent Griffin and Deputy Romero agreed to roll out a survey to high school staff beginning the next day to collect data on what is working and where the district should improve.
The board did not vote on a policy change but directed administration to gather feedback and return with findings that will inform any future decisions.
