Platteville council discusses Pine Street water-main break, temporary repairs and traffic impacts

City staff told the Platteville Common Council on May 13 that a significant water-main break on Pine Street required emergency action and a temporary surface patch that is causing traffic and safety concerns.
"Our team scrambled within 24 hours," City Manager Clint said, reporting that crews replaced the water line and applied a temporary patch. Director Crowfoot said the temporary repair is not permanent and that the city will discuss more permanent repairs, including replacement of undermined concrete panels, at the Water and Sewer Commission meeting the next day.
Council members and staff noted the patch has produced ruts and that larger vehicles have difficulty negotiating the detour geometry. Crowfoot said passenger vehicles can use Main Street as an alternate, but large vehicles face turning constraints; during the emergency the city temporarily removed parking near Pine and Chestnut to allow large-vehicle turns.
Council asked staff to consider detour signage or an alternate route and to follow up with plans that balance traffic safety and impacts on nearby businesses. Crowfoot said the patch will remain in place until permanent concrete replacement is scheduled.
