Platteville staff launches RFP process for independent audit services; proposals due Sept. 26

City staff presented a request-for-proposal process for independent auditing services during the Sept. 9 Platteville Common Council meeting, citing best practices from the Government Finance Officers Association.
Staff said the city last conducted an RFP in 2022 and postponed one in 2023–24 due to transitions and accounting-rule changes. The proposed timetable in the meeting packet calls for distribution of the RFP this week, a submission deadline of Sept. 26, staff review the week ending Oct. 3, presentation of a staff recommendation on Oct. 14, and council action to follow. Staff noted the city budgeted $40,000 for audit services in 2025 and spent $39,079 in 2024; the audit work described includes single audits and TIF audits and incorporates the housing authority and other city funds.
Staff said the RFP will be published widely and sent to firms that have submitted proposals in the past; if a selected firm's cost materially differs from the budgeted amount, the 2026 budget would be adjusted to reflect audit costs. Councilmembers asked about the timeline and about how firms will be notified; staff said distribution channels would include municipal bid publications and direct notices to previous firms.
Council did not take formal action on the RFP at the meeting; staff invited council feedback on the draft document before distribution.
