The Platteville Common Council on Jan. 27 approved Resolution 2602 authorizing a raze order for the property at 645 Sickles Street after staff reported prolonged, unresolved code violations.
City staff explained the city obtained an inspection warrant, inspected the property twice, and determined the structure meets the statutory requirements to proceed with a raze order. "This is actually the second inspection warrant we received, so we've gone into the property twice," Joe told the council, adding that the property is "beyond fixing up" and likely would cost more to repair than it is worth.
Under the process described by staff, a raze order gives the owner 30 days to come into compliance; if the owner does not comply, the city can pursue an eviction order and then proceed with razing the building. Staff said they had contacted county social services to seek assistance for occupants who may need alternate housing when enforcement progresses.
A motion to approve the resolution was made, seconded and passed by the council. Councilmembers asked questions about prior notification attempts and property tax status; staff said violation notices had been sent for years and mail delivery had been refused or not accepted. The council recorded the vote in the affirmative and adopted the resolution.
Next steps: staff will follow the code‑enforcement timeline for notices and, if the owner does not comply within 30 days, pursue eviction and remediation consistent with municipal procedures.
