A Rapid River resident who identified herself as Mary told the Delta County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 17 that on March 23 she and her family were the targets of an attack by a neighbor who allegedly shot at them. Mary said the accused assailant is on house arrest with ankle and alcohol monitoring, but she alleged monitoring was not set up correctly and that she continues to see the person in the community with a knife. She said she has contacted police and the district attorney’s office without satisfactory help and pleaded with commissioners for assistance, saying she and her family are frightened to remain at home.
Mary described severe personal consequences for her family, saying her husband is a 100‑percent disabled veteran and that her 19‑year‑old son attempted suicide after the incident. She said she had sought help from multiple agencies and felt victim services and law enforcement had failed to provide adequate protection.
Commissioners responded by offering to follow up: one commissioner volunteered to reach out to her and to the county’s liaison to the prosecutor’s office and to the sheriff’s office to "nip this and find out what's going on." Another commissioner said she would personally reach out to gather more details and to understand the competing accounts in the case. Board members also expressed concern about officers suggesting victims relocate when seeking help.
The board did not take immediate formal action at the meeting beyond promising outreach and liaison contacts to the prosecutor and sheriff; commissioners said they would follow up with the resident to better understand the sequence of events and whether county officials could take additional steps.
