Mayor says Republic Steel site and other brownfields have developer interest; mega‑site wastewater and utilities remain long‑term challenges

Mayor Bradley said developers have eyed the Republic Steel site, the old Egyptian plant and the industrial park. He said Republic Steel is paying $250,000 for a FirstEnergy load study to determine how much power can be brought to the mill property. The mayor stressed these are active discussions often protected by nondisclosure agreements and said he could not disclose details but that interest is real.
Council members raised signs and county mega‑site proposals visible near Leverett Road and asked whether such mega‑site planning would affect Lorain’s finances. The mayor said wastewater treatment and related infrastructure for a mega‑site are major, long‑term investments, that a wastewater plant and associated infrastructure could take a decade and cost far more than cited grant figures, and that utilities money is restricted to utility functions and cannot be transferred into the general fund.
Council and administration also noted housing development activity — new single‑family housing projects and infill near Mercy Hospital — and said strengthening schools and utilities capacity would support economic recruitment. No formal development agreements or incentives were voted on in the meeting.
