Advisory board recommends ‘Barking Lot’ name for John Parker Junior Park parking area

The Salina Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted on Jan. 21 to recommend the City Commission accept a naming suggestion for the parking area at John Parker Junior Park.
Staff described a naming process that began with community nominations and a Salina311 poll that produced roughly 7,800 submissions. The top choice from the community poll, reported staff, was “Barking Lot,” which received about 44% of votes and is the staff recommendation to the board.
Board members moved and seconded a recommendation to forward the parking-area naming to the City Commission, and the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said signage options are under consideration and that installation would follow the commission’s decision and standard municipal signage rules.
The naming is part of a formal municipal facilities naming procedure: staff said the city clerk provided an affidavit verifying the application met the Salina Municipal Facilities Naming Guidelines; the commission will complete the final review and take formal action.
