The Salina Board of Zoning Appeals voted Jan. 15 to accept its 2025 annual report and transmit it to the City Commission.
Planning staff summarized the board's 2025 activity: the planning division received 10 variance applications in 2025 (eight on residential properties and two on commercial properties), and the board heard one appeal. Approved matters in 2025 included an accessory-building size application, a floodway variance for new home construction, a variance on allowable accessory structure counts, an off-street parking approval, a rear-yard setback approval and a maximum height decision; one sign-size application was withdrawn.
Staff also described recent personnel changes: a long-serving staff member (Dean Andrew) retired in June after 38 years; the presenter has transitioned into the planning manager role and the department is conducting interviews to fill one open staff position. The board was briefed on 2026 goals including preparing an RFP for a comprehensive plan and, subsequently, a zoning-code rewrite, with major activity expected in 2027.
Board members moved and seconded a motion to accept the annual report and transmit it to the City Commission. After the voice vote carried, the motion maker and seconder were identified as Dave Baker and Randall Hardy. The board made one small correction to membership expiration dates before approving transmittal. Staff said no further board action was required at the meeting.
