Salina adopts updated 2018 building and trade codes, delays controversial fire-sprinkler rule

Salina commissioners on Dec. 8 approved most of a multi-year update to the city's building and trade codes, adopting 2018 model code language with local amendments and an effective date of Jan. 1, 2026, while allowing active and pending permits to proceed under the existing code.
The package covers a broad set of code booksincluding the International Building Code, International Residential Code, Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical codes, the National Electrical Code and the new International Existing Building Code. Lauren Driscoll, director of community and development services, said the review began in August 2022, involved seven subcommittees that met 38 times and included public meetings and targeted outreach to contractors, building trades and affected businesses.
