Chairwoman Donovan said the committee would consider House Bill H7193, a resolution from Representative Carson to extend the special legislative commission studying older-adult services and coordination. The committee voted by roll call to pass the extension and the chair stated the resolution will move to the House floor.
Representative Carson, sponsor of the resolution, said the commission has pursued a multi-sector planning approach with consulting from the Center for Healthcare Strategies and broad outreach including a July meeting attended by roughly 85 stakeholders. He told the committee the work is not complete and the commission needs another year to finalize recommendations and to consider creating a permanent body to continue the work afterwards.
Carol Costa of the Senior Agenda Coalition of Rhode Island and other stakeholders testified in favor of extending the commission, describing the outreach and stressing the public-health importance of coordinating aging services across state and local providers. Committee members asked about the commission's domains, funding alignment and data-integration challenges; Representative Carson said the commission is not seeking major new funding this year but needs time to align federal planning requirements with state programs.
After discussion, Chairwoman Donovan called for the motion to pass the resolution. The clerk conducted a roll-call vote; the chair announced, "Resolution passes," and the committee recorded that the measure will be reported to the full House.
