Summary
At its 2026 organizational meeting the Canfield Local School District Board elected its president and vice president, approved routine consent resolutions, adopted a school resource officer agreement with the City of Canfield, and approved a city-requested 10‑year CRA tax abatement; votes were unanimous on recorded roll calls.
The Canfield Local School District Board held its 2026 organizational meeting, swore in newly elected members and elected board officers before moving into regular business. Members unanimously approved a package of routine resolutions, a school resource officer agreement with the City of Canfield and a community reinvestment area (CRA) tax-exemption request for a local business.
President DeMilo was nominated and confirmed as board president after a motion and second; Mister Atway was elected vice president. The board recorded each officer vote by roll call. "I will make a motion to nominate Mister DeMilo for president," the chair said during the officer election, and the nominee accepted the nomination.
The board approved a consent agenda of administrative actions that included setting the Board of Education Service Fund at $5,000, designating The Vindicator as the district’s official newspaper and adopting local policy 24-60 (Special Education) to satisfy Ohio operating standards. The superintendent asked for the resolutions to be approved "as present," and trustees voted yes on the roll call.
On school safety, the board adopted the SRO agreement with the City of Canfield covering school resource officers at all three district buildings. The motion was made and seconded and passed by roll call. Board members and the superintendent highlighted that both the township and city provide financial support for the SRO program.
On economic development, the board approved Resolution 116-2026, responding to a City of Canfield request to extend a Community Reinvestment Area exemption to a business for a 10-year, 100% abatement. Board members noted that the city can grant up to 75% under its authority and sought the board’s approval for the remaining 25% to reach the full 100% abatement.
Other formal approvals included minutes from the Dec. 10, 2025 meeting, acceptance of the treasurer’s report, participation in the Ohio School Boards Association legal assistance fund at $250 and several personnel and extracurricular listings that were presented on the consent agenda. The board approved two out‑of‑state student field trips and accepted multiple community donations to school programs.
The meeting closed after members scheduled a facilities work session and discussed next steps for the district’s strategic plan.
