Goodland tables $105,000 airport change order after commissioners seek contractor answers

The Goodland City Commission on Oct. 7 voted to table Change Order #1 for the airport seal‑and‑paint contract after staff reported that crack sealing work expanded from an estimated 60,000 linear feet to more than 90,000 linear feet, increasing the contract by roughly $105,000.
Staff said the additional work covered the main runway, taxiway and apron areas and that the project used available grant funds (KDOT Aviation). Commissioners expressed frustration that the extra work proceeded before the commission formally approved the change order and asked that someone from the engineering firm EBH or the contractor be present to explain the discrepancy.
Commissioner Showalter moved and Commissioner Redland seconded to table the change order and to request a representative from EBH be present. The motion passed on roll call. Commissioners also tabled the related pay estimate pending the same follow‑up.
Staff and contractors will be expected to provide documentation explaining why the amount of crack sealing exceeded original estimates and to return to the commission before the city pays the change order amount.
