DeKalb committee approves $1.3M ceiling to complete animal shelter expansion

The DeKalb County Operations Committee on Nov. 25 approved a change order that raises the contract ceiling for the county's animal shelter expansion to a total not to exceed $1,300,000.
Project staff told the committee that about $735,000 of the total covers outstanding invoices for completed work and that an additional $564,839 from the county general fund would be set aside for other facility projects and minor repairs. "We're actually going through the final process with the City of Chamblee...we're ready to move them in," project staff said during the meeting.
Commissioners asked for clarification about what the additional $564,839 would pay for; staff described it as a general allowance for upgrades and renovations to older parts of the shelter and said they would provide a list of specific projects. Commissioners emphasized they did not want repeated requests for completion money and asked staff to confirm that the funds would close out the project.
The motion to approve the change order passed by voice vote. Staff committed to providing a breakdown of the additional funds and documentation on remaining paperwork with the City of Chamblee.
