During public comment on Feb. 24, multiple community members raised a safety and bullying complaint concerning a sixth‑grade student at Nellie Kauffman (Neli Kauffman) Middle School.
Virginia Campos told the board she came to request help for her son, alleging that school leaders (she named principal Melissa Gallito and Title IX coordinator Antonia Hunt) had not moved a student her son identified as the attacker and that administrators were not enforcing consequences for harassment and privacy violations. "My son is really affected by it," Campos said, asking the board to pay attention and act.
Veronica Juarez added that the incident involved a recording in a restroom that had been shared and could be further distributed; she described it as a serious safety/security concern that should involve parents, teachers and administrators and urged active supervision and policy clarity.
Superintendent and staff acknowledged public comment and recorded concerns; board members asked for follow-up. Doctor Funches and other administrators took notes and indicated the district would look into the matter and bring information back to the board and families as appropriate.
The board did not take a public vote or make a formal finding at the meeting; multiple trustees thanked the speakers for raising the issue and asked staff to investigate. Board policy and Title IX process were discussed as the appropriate contexts for response.
What happens next: district staff noted they had recorded the comments and said administrators will follow up with appropriate investigative steps and communication with the family. The board reiterated expectations that school safety issues be escalated and handled according to district policy.
