Platteville staff propose 2026 fee schedule updates; council raises notice and residency questions

City staff presented a redlined 2026 fee schedule to the council on Nov. 10 proposing changes across building inspection, library, museum and Parks & Recreation fees. The proposal includes restructuring building inspection minimums, adding museum admission increases and a new "museum after dark" program, and adding nonresident rental and pool fees for the Broski Center and pool passes.
Council members questioned how residency would be determined for nonresident fees and whether the proposed pool nonresident charge of $6 per person was appropriate. Staff said the committee reviewed surrounding community rates and recommended $6, which they said aligns with area pools. A council member suggested the nonresident fee could be higher given the level of taxpayer support; staff responded the committee compared multiple area pools when setting the recommendation.
Members also urged proactive outreach to local contractors and permit applicants about building inspection fee changes. One councilor said, "we need to reach out to people and say, these have changed and this is what it's gonna be," and staff agreed to issue a press release and consider targeted notices to frequent permit applicants.
The fee schedule will be brought back for action at the next meeting; staff noted funeral directors and other stakeholders should be notified due to effects on families and permits.
