The Socorro Planning and Zoning Commission voted Sept. 2 to approve a rezoning for Lot 28, North Loop Acres (624 Hesse Drive), changing the property from R‑1 single‑family residential to R‑2 medium‑density residential to permit a duplex. Lorraine Quimito, city planner, told the commission the 13,460‑square‑foot lot is vacant and that staff recommends approval to allow the two‑unit development.
Quimito said the future land use map in the Socorro 2040 comprehensive plan depicts the area as suburban residential and described surrounding zoning and land uses, noting the subdivision was recorded in 1956 and that public notices sent to property owners within 200 feet produced no responses in support or opposition. "Item number 6 for your consideration is a rezoning request for 624 Hesse Drive," Quimito said during her presentation.
Commissioners asked no substantive questions during the discussion. A motion to approve the rezoning — limited to allowing a duplex as recommended by staff — was made, seconded and carried. The chair announced the motion carried and the rezoning was approved.
The approval implements the staff‑recommended zone change; any required permits or building plans for the duplex will proceed through standard city review and permitting processes.
