Milton SD pilots new math and health-care programs, tightens activities handbook

Milton School District administrators outlined plans to pilot new secondary math resources and expand career-focused programming, while proposing notable changes to the activities handbook that will affect co-curricular eligibility and student conduct outside the classroom.
Julie, who presented the secondary math update, said the high school math team narrowed four candidate resources to two and will pilot CPM and Amplify Desmos this fall with six high-school teachers and two eighth-grade algebra teachers. The district’s goal is to select one resource for adoption for the 2026–27 school year.
On career and technical offerings, Jeremy described rapid growth in student interest for health-care sciences and the district’s work with Plunkett Resich to develop renderings for a potential renovation of three-and-a-half classrooms at the high school to create a dedicated health-care sciences facility. "I'm in the process now of seeking partners that would help with the funding of that," Jeremy said, noting prior successful on-site partnerships for CNA and EMT instruction (Mercy Health and Blackhawk Tech were named as past or current partners).
Jeremy also summarized three major activities-handbook updates developed by staff: (1) creation of a tier 1 classification that groups competitive co-curricular programs (show choir, marching band, fishing club, FFA, FBLA, musical) under consistent eligibility rules similar to athletics; (2) new language designating habitual academic dishonesty as a violation of the activities code with stricter consequences for repeat incidents; and (3) clarified appeal procedures that add an intermediate review level previously not part of the superintendent’s role.
Administrators said they will provide education to students and advisers about the changes and staged rollouts this fall. District staff also emphasized that the activities handbook changes do not alter core academic grading but can affect outside-of-class participation for students who do not meet eligibility criteria.
Next steps: math pilots and the Character Strong SEL rollout begin in the coming days and weeks; the district will continue seeking funding partners for facility work and will communicate specifics of handbook changes to students and families.
