The staff member said the program covers public outreach and involvement, construction-site runoff controls, post-construction stormwater management, pollution prevention and internal good-housekeeping for departments such as public works and water. He said about 80% of the village's stormwater drains to the Sawmill River and about 20% drains through Manhattan Park toward the Bronx River, which he described as "a little more, delicate" and noted as an impaired water body. The report emphasizes annual maintenance and inspection of post-construction filtration systems, more extensive employee training, improved system mapping and increased water sampling at outfalls to check for illicit discharges and contaminants.
"This 18 page report ... talks about how we're in compliance and everything we're doing and going forward," the presenter said, adding the village will record the meeting date for state reporting and post the final report publicly. The board did not take a formal vote on the report during the discussion; the presentation was followed by routine agenda items.
The presentation highlighted the Sawmill River cleanup event scheduled for "the 20 sixth," which staff said has drawn strong volunteer participation in prior years and serves both cleanup and education goals for children and community volunteers. The village will continue to coordinate outreach and sampling work tied to the DEC reporting schedule.
The village identified next steps including expanded sampling at outfalls that discharge to impaired waters, ongoing mapping of the stormwater system and additional employee training over the coming five years.
