The Springfield R‑XII Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt the district’s 2025–26 budget and an accompanying salary schedule after extended discussion on the budget process and long-term fiscal commitments.
Superintendent Dr. Lathan told the board the compensation proposals were developed through collective bargaining; some groups received combined COLA and step increases ranging from 1.65% to 5.25%. Employees not represented by bargaining units were reported to receive a 2% cost‑of‑living adjustment plus a step increase. The superintendent announced a starting teacher salary for next year of $45,917, described in the meeting as a roughly 15% increase from the prior starting rate.
Board member Mahad Makani, who requested separate consideration of several policies earlier in the meeting, said the budget process reflected two years of systematic review and a move toward greater transparency. Makani noted the district used a mix of incremental and zero‑based techniques during development and stressed the public should be informed about trade‑offs and longer‑term obligations created by permanent salary increases.
Board members praised efforts to prioritize classroom supports and teacher compensation. Board member Provance highlighted investments in classroom coaches, after‑school tutoring, and supports for attendance and student services. Several members thanked staff for extensive small‑group budget briefings leading up to the vote.
On the roll call, the motion to approve the 2025–26 budget and the recommended salary schedule carried unanimously.
What happens next: Board and staff said they will continue to report on the budget’s implementation and monitor long‑term impacts of stepped salary commitments.
