Board OKs $593,000 project to replace or modify high‑school doors tied to safety audit

District facilities staff presented a safety-driven door replacement and modification project for high schools and the district’s studio building and the board approved the contract by a 7–0 vote.

Sean Dill Day summarized the work as tied to a prior safety audit that found doors that did not close properly or had failing frames and hardware. He said the project will include a combination of full door replacements and targeted hardware modifications: “Some of those are going to be complete door replacement. Some of them is going to be door modifications or door hardware changes,” he said. The work is intended to reduce the number of exterior entry points and to install alarms on certain egress doors so staff can identify if an exterior door is opened outside of normal access points.

Dill Day asked the board to approve the project for $593,000 and named the contractor in the presentation (transcript reads “Navajo's construction”). Board members asked how many doors would be affected and were told the scope varies by campus and includes both replacements and hardware changes rather than every door in each building.

A motion to approve the contract was moved and seconded; the board approved the project by voice vote, recorded as unanimous (7–0). Staff said the work ties to broader access-control upgrades and follows consultation with school police and building principals.

The board also considered related bond change orders and project closeouts during the same facilities item; staff reported minor returns to the bond fund for closed projects and presented an audiovisual package expense for one school site as part of the change-order report.
