Board adopts 2026–27 school calendar after committee review

The Springfield Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt the proposed 2026–27 school calendar after a presentation from the district’s chief human resources officer and calendar committee.
The draft contains two versions: an early childhood-through-12 calendar and a PYP (Primary Years Program) calendar that applies to Boyd Field and Rountree elementary schools. Both calendars include 171 student contact days. The HR presentation noted that the elementary K–8 calendar provides 1,111.5 instructional hours and the secondary calendar provides 1,093.5 instructional hours; the PYP variant lists 1,099.5 instructional hours.
Committee members from local higher education, teacher representatives, and building principals contributed to the draft. The committee recommended shifting the Thanksgiving break to a shorter window in 2026–27 to avoid overly lopsided semester lengths caused by the calendar’s relationship to Labor Day; the district explained the adjustment preserves semester balance without extending past Memorial Day.
Board Member Huff moved to adopt the calendar; Board Member Mahad Makani seconded. The board chair recorded the motion as carrying with seven affirmative votes, and the calendar was adopted as presented.
The calendar adoption included an instruction for staff to make slide materials available to board members who requested additional access to site-specific slides (a board member noted difficulty uploading slides during the meeting). No changes to bargaining agreements were announced as part of the vote.
