The Beaufort County Executive Committee on Feb. 23 recommended three actions to the full County Council following an executive-session discussion.
The committee voted to recommend that Janet Shelley be appointed to the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Board to fill a vacant seat. Speaker 4 moved the recommendation and Speaker 3 seconded; the committee approved the motion by voice/hand vote.
The committee also recommended that the council appoint Council Chair Alice Howard to the Southern Carolina Alliance Board of Directors and to serve on that board’s executive committee for a three-year term. The motion to recommend the chair’s appointment was made and seconded during the meeting and approved by the committee.
Finally, the committee voted to recommend engaging the law firm Howell Gibson and Hughes PA to provide legal representation and advisory services in matters presented to or before County Council as discussed in executive session. The motion stated the point of contact would be the chair of County Council and authorized the chair to execute the engagement letter upon council ratification; the committee’s recommendation was to forward the decision to County Council at that body’s meeting that night. The chair recorded the engagement-related vote as unanimous.
No detailed contract amount, scope-of-work document, or departmental assignee for implementation was read into the public transcript. The motions as recorded name movers and seconders in the transcript (for the law-firm engagement, Speaker 5 moved and Speaker 1 recorded the motion as "Motion by mister Passamond, seconded by Martha mister Bartholomew"). The committee’s recommendations were forwarded to County Council for final action.
