Child nutrition manager Hannah Bishop told the SHAC that KIPP Texas serves all student meals for free under the Community Eligibility Provision and invited parents and staff to join region-specific menu advisory committees for next school year.
At the Feb. 19 School Health Advisory Council meeting, Hannah Bishop, child nutrition education manager, reviewed recent promotions in KIPP Texas cafeterias and reminded attendees that all student meals are provided free under the USDA Community Eligibility Provision.
"We actually serve all of our meals to our students for free," Bishop said, explaining that families do not need to submit free- or reduced-price meal applications and any student may receive a meal. She said she would share a link to current menus in the meeting chat for attendees to review.
Bishop described seasonal and cultural promotions the nutrition teams ran this school year — including Black History Month items, Latin-inspired menu items in September/October and heart-shaped pizzas in San Antonio for Valentine’s Day — and encouraged feedback from students, teachers and parents.
She invited participants to join region-specific menu advisory committees: there is one advisory group for each of the four KIPP Texas cities (Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio). Committee volunteers will sample proposed menu items and provide feedback for the next school year. Bishop noted the advisory groups operate separately by region because service models differ across the network.
Bishop also announced a temporary staffing change in DFW nutrition coverage: Nina is no longer with the program, and Sandra from San Antonio will temporarily cover DFW questions. Contact information for regional nutrition leads is available via the attendance tracker that Madeline shared during the meeting.
