Planning staff schedules master-plan open house; commissioners press county on crosswalk replacement and downtown road-safety options

Clawson planning staff said on Jan. 14 that a master-plan open house is scheduled for Jan. 28 with materials on downtown and the draft master plan available for public review, and asked commissioners to attend and help solicit public feedback.
"That'll go until 7, 07:15 before the regular meeting," said Unidentified Speaker (Speaker 2) describing the open-house timing; staff said they will include downtown master-plan concepts and downtown streetscape information at the event.
Commissioners used the staff report to press for immediate action on pedestrian safety downtown after two recent accidents. One commissioner asked whether crosswalk lights on East 14 Mile are operational; staff replied the East 14 Mile crossing is under review by the Oakland County Road Commission and a grant to replace it with a HAWK signal is currently held up. Staff said the Washington crosswalk is operational.
Commissioners and staff discussed traffic-calming measures, including a potential road diet to reduce travel lanes and slow vehicles downtown, but noted that speed-limit changes would require coordination with Oakland County. Staff said they would consult with police (Chief Baus) and check whether public updates could be posted on the city news page while longer-term solutions are explored.
Staff also reported on development activity, including a certificate of occupancy at 502 South Main (the old CNC shop) and near-term reviews of the Baker School site and a 39 single-family development application expected in February.
