The Clawson Planning Commission voted Jan. 28 to set a public hearing on a proposed short-term rental ordinance for Feb. 25, 2025, after staff summarized edits to the draft and commissioners discussed exemptions and inspection authority.
Staff said the main changes to the draft included removal of a fence requirement the council had objected to, clarification of rationale language and new exemptions (occupancy by family members or their guests without remuneration; single-room rentals in an owner-occupied dwelling; non-owner occupancy by a house-sitter without remuneration; occupancy by a prior owner under a rental agreement after sale; occupancy by a trustee or guardian). The planning department recommended the ordinance be scheduled for public hearing in the commission’s second February meeting.
Commissioners discussed the practical effect of inspections and whether the city council would adopt recommended language; the commission moved to approve the ordinance as presented and to schedule the public hearing for Feb. 25, 2025. A roll call recorded unanimous support. The hearing will provide the formal opportunity for residents to testify before the commission records a recommendation to city council.
