Board asks for study before approving Ice Age Trail routing through Cottonwood Wayside

Representatives from the Ice Age Trail Alliance outlined a proposed blazed routing that would place a designated Ice Age Trail segment along the village‑owned Cottonwood Wayside and adjacent Land Conservancy property. Chad DuChateau of the Ice Age Trail Alliance described years of volunteer restoration and boardwalk work and said the proposed yellow blaze largely follows existing footpaths.
Public works and planning staff raised concerns about the northern crossing where the trail would intersect a village road shoulder. Staff said ADA crosswalk elements (truncated domes) and shoulder build‑out could be required when routing a trail through a right‑of‑way, and these improvements could carry significant cost. Trustees asked staff to investigate cost, liability and property impacts and whether routing the trail might create long‑term constraints on future uses of the green space (for example, a disc‑golf proposal discussed by trustees).
Rather than vote on the proposal, the board asked staff to gather estimates and return with recommendations at an early May meeting (approximately 90 days). Chad DuChateau and alliance volunteers offered to assist with on‑site reviews and follow‑up information.
