Council accepts $2.265 million sewer grant to study and upgrade local system

The Holyoke City Council voted Feb. 17 to accept a $2,265,000 no-match grant from the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development (EOHED) to assess and make construction upgrades to the city's sewer system.
Councilor Devine said the DPW director attended committee and summarized the grant as a DPW program to evaluate multiple sewer locations and fund construction upgrades as needed. The order authorizes establishment of a fund to manage the grant proceeds.
On roll-call second reading the council recorded unanimous support and the order was adopted. Councilors said the grant would help correct sewer system problems and support targeted construction work identified by DPW assessment.
No local match was required under the grant terms as presented to council; DPW will lead implementation and return to council or committees as required for project-specific approvals and contracting.
