Holyoke council elects Megan McGrath Smith as vice president

The Holyoke City Council elected Councilor Megan McGrath Smith as its vice president during the Feb. 17 regular meeting. Councilors voted by roll call in alphabetical order; McGrath Smith received nine votes to two for Patty Devine and two for Linda Bacon and was declared elected on the first ballot.
The council then administered the oath. McGrath Smith said, "I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties incumbent upon me as vice president of the city council of the city of Holyoke," pledging to uphold both the state and federal constitutions and the ordinances and rules of the city council.
The election moved quickly after the president asked whether the body preferred appointments to certain committees be made by the president or decided by vote. Councilors discussed how the president typically makes appointments to advisory and ad hoc committees but left the vice-presidential vote to the full body. The council returned to agenda business after the oath was administered.
The council recorded the initial ballot counts on the floor before taking the oath and continuing with committee and ordinance items for the evening.
