The Ordinance Committee voted unanimously Feb. 24 to recommend an amendment to the city code that ties the local definition of motorized scooters to the state statute.
Under the approved language, the definition in Section 86-1 will be amended to reference "those defined under MGL Chapter 90, Section 1A or 1E as a motorized bicycle or motorized scooter," ensuring the city's ordinance automatically aligns with any subsequent changes to the state definition.
Councilors and staff said aligning the local code with the state law avoids unintentional conflicts and clarifies enforcement for police and planning staff. The committee will forward the recommended language to the full city council with a favorable recommendation.
The amendment passed on a roll-call vote with all members present voting yes.
